Gilbert still calls itself a town and has never changed the sign, but it is a city of roughly a quarter of a million people and it builds like one. The run down from the yard is plain: Higley Road straight south, or Greenfield when Higley has a lane closed, and inside twenty-five minutes on a normal morning we are backing into a driveway off Warner or Ray. It is one of the easier loaded runs we make, because the grid out there is wide, flat and new, and nearly every street was laid out with a truck in mind.

The housing tells you what work comes out of it. Gilbert was farm ground into the 1980s — cotton, alfalfa and citrus — and then it built out in one long push from the early 1990s through the 2010s. That means street after street of stucco with concrete tile roofs, three-car drives, block property walls and rock front yards, all of it hitting the same maintenance wall at the same time. The 1990s subdivisions off Val Vista and Greenfield are on their first tile roof now, and that is where the weight problem starts: concrete tile runs roughly 900 to 1,000 pounds a roofing square against about 250 pounds for asphalt shingle, so a tear-off that looks like a 20 by volume is a 15 or even a 10 by weight. Agritopia and Morrison Ranch on the north side are newer and tighter. The Heritage District around the water tower holds the oldest stock in town, small block houses on narrow lots with alleys behind them.

The town has its own permit counter, its own solid waste utility and its own household hazardous waste facility — a Mesa utility bill gets you into none of it, and Mesa’s HHM drive-through on Center Street is for Mesa customers only. Check what applies at gilbertaz.gov rather than assuming Mesa’s answers carry over the line. Placement itself is usually the easy part: three-car drives, deep setbacks and wide streets mean nearly every Gilbert delivery goes on the driveway, on boards. Getting a truck to you

Higley Road south is the default — straight through Mesa and into north Gilbert, twenty to twenty-five minutes with no freeway involved at all. For the south end and the San Tan Village side we take US-60 west to Loop 202 Santan, which is faster outside the morning peak. Greenfield is the fallback when Higley has a lane shut. Before we book we want the street, whether the box goes on the drive or in the street, what the driveway surface is and roughly how old it is, whether an HOA sets a day limit, and what the load actually is — tile, rock and concrete get sized by weight, remodel debris by volume.

Permits, streets and placement in Gilbert

On a private driveway in Gilbert you generally do not need a permit at all. Placement in the public street or right-of-way is a different matter, and here the requirement follows the address rather than the county: in Mesa a street placement needs a City of Mesa Temporary Traffic Control (barricade) permit — 480-644-4882, barricade@mesaaz.gov — and Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, Scottsdale, Queen Creek, Paradise Valley and Apache Junction each run their own equivalent desk with their own form and lead time. Where the road is a state route, ADOT is the authority instead of the city. For addresses over the line in Pinal County the asbestos programme runs through ADEQ instead.
