Chandler is the long haul of our western runs, forty minutes down and forty back on a good day, and it is worth the drive because the work there is substantial. We usually take US-60 west, drop south on Loop 101 Price, and come off at Chandler Boulevard or Ray depending on where the address sits. If the job is on the east side we cut across on Loop 202 Santan from Gilbert instead. South of Ocotillo Road the mile grid opens up and the driving gets fast.

The city reads as three layers. Around the historic square you have the original town: small houses from the 1910s through the 1950s, low block ranch, carports, narrow single-car drives and mature landscaping that has had eighty years to get out of hand — olive, citrus, oleander hedges and date palms that nobody planted with a bucket truck in mind. The container work follows those layers. Downtown gives us estate cleanouts, kitchen and bath gut-outs and the occasional teardown, all of it complicated by the pre-1980 date. Every one of these houses is slab-on-grade with nothing underneath it, so when you are sizing a whole-house cleanout here, count the garage, the attic hatch, the patio and the shed, and stop there.

For north Chandler we come across Loop 202 Santan from Gilbert instead, and for the middle of town Arizona Avenue is the straightest line once you are down there. Permits, streets and placement in Chandler

On a private driveway in Chandler you generally do not need a permit at all. Placement in the public street or right-of-way is a different matter, and here the requirement follows the address rather than the county: in Mesa a street placement needs a City of Mesa Temporary Traffic Control (barricade) permit — 480-644-4882, barricade@mesaaz.gov — and Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, Scottsdale, Queen Creek, Paradise Valley and Apache Junction each run their own equivalent desk with their own form and lead time.
