Apache Junction is a straight shot east from the yard, twenty minutes on US-60 or a little longer up the Apache Trail if the address is on the north side, and it is the moment the map changes underneath you. Meridian Road is the Maricopa county line. Cross it and you are in Pinal County: a different county government, a different permit desk, a different air quality authority and a different set of answers to almost every question a Mesa customer thinks they already know. Two jobs three miles apart can sit under two different rulebooks, and we get that call most weeks.

The town itself is built against the Superstition Mountains and it has never pretended to be a subdivision city. A great deal of what stands here is manufactured housing and park models — Roadhaven, Rock Shadows, Superstition Sunrise and a dozen other resorts — alongside older block houses on generous lots, horse property on the fringes, and newer stucco-and-tile subdivisions filling in around Ironwood and Baseline. The park-model stock is the defining thing. Those units came in through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, they have Arizona rooms and carports and awnings bolted on afterwards, and they are on lots you can very nearly touch both sides of.

That shapes the work. Apache Junction runs on the snowbird calendar: the resorts fill in October, the town is busy through the winter, and March and April bring the departures, the sales and the estate cleanouts. We do a lot of park-model clear-outs, Arizona room and carport tear-downs, and awning and skirting removal, plus the usual desert load of landscape rock, palm and mesquite. Everything is on a slab or a pier-and-pad set with nothing beneath it worth mentioning, so the volume is the shed, the carport and the Arizona room.

The county line is the first practical fact. Apache Junction is Pinal County, so for anything outside the city’s own remit the authority is pinal.gov, not Maricopa County, and Pinal runs its own air quality and fugitive dust programme rather than sitting under the Maricopa rules. Our own practice does not change either way — three inches of freeboard, tarp on every load leaving the site — but if your job needs a dust registration or a demolition notification, ask Pinal, not Maricopa, and ask the city about its own right of way. Mesa’s programmes do not reach out here at all: no Mesa green barrel, no Mesa bulk pickup, and the Mesa HHM drive-through is for Mesa utility customers only. The second fact is space. In the park-model and RV resorts the lanes are narrow, the turns are tight, the overhead is full of awnings, carports and utility drops, and many resorts require management approval and a specific placement before a container comes through the gate. Get that cleared first and give us the resort name and the space number when you call. We often bring a 10 or a 15 into these communities simply because it fits where a 20 will not. Out on the acreage north and east of town the problem flips to septic tanks, drain fields and well heads — real out here in a way they are not inside Mesa — so mark them and we will keep a loaded truck well clear. Getting a truck to you

US-60 east to Idaho Road is twenty minutes from the yard and covers most of the town. For anything on the north side we take Brown Road east to Meridian and cross the county line on the surface, or run the Apache Trail out of east Mesa. Ironwood Drive handles the east side. What we need before booking: whether the address is a resort space or a private lot, the resort name and management contact if it is a resort, the width of the lane and what is overhead, whether there is a septic system or well on an acreage lot, and whether the load is park-model teardown, household or rock and green waste.

Permits, streets and placement in Apache Junction

On a private driveway in Apache Junction you generally do not need a permit at all. Placement in the public street or right-of-way is a different matter, and here the requirement follows the address rather than the county: in Mesa a street placement needs a City of Mesa Temporary Traffic Control (barricade) permit — 480-644-4882, barricade@mesaaz.gov — and Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, Scottsdale, Queen Creek, Paradise Valley and Apache Junction each run their own equivalent desk with their own form and lead time. Where the road is a state route, ADOT is the authority instead of the city.
